A potential BCS Mess (again)

Going into yesterday’s games…here is what the BCS Standings looked like: #1: Alabama, #2 Oklahoma, #3 Texas, #4 Florida

It was a very entertaining day of college football yesterday. But it now sets the stage for some major league controversy. Here are the facts: #4 Florida beat the the top ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama in the SEC Title Game. And in the Big 12 Championship Game, Oklahoma looked strong as they blew away Missouri. This sets up a potential Florida – Oklahoma BCS Title Game…something I have a problem with. What about Texas? The so called experts on ESPN were saying yesterday that Florida has to be in the title game, for they just beat the number one team in the nation. OK, that is a legitimate argument. But wait a minute. Didn’t Texas beat the number one ranked Sooners way back on October 11? Why does #4 Florida leap frog over #3 Texas? Just because Florida beat a number one later in the calendar year, does that make their win better? Lets look at the two teams head to head. They both beat the number one team in the country on neutral fields and they both have one loss. But lets look compare those losses. Texas  lost on the road 39-33 on Nov. 1 to then #7 Texas Tech. Florida lost at home to then unranked Ole Miss on Sept. 27! Based on that, I say the advantage goes to Texas. But to be fair to Florida, it should really be them versus Texas. Because based on a head to head match up, Oklahoma should not be ranked ahead of Texas AT ALL! Texas beat them fair and square on October 12. The BCS is a MESS!

-Some fantastic games are going on today. The early games are just getting wrapped up, so here is a quick look at what else is happening today.

•At 3:30, Michigan State visits Penn State in a critical Big10 matchup

•Maryland hosts FSU at 7:45. The senario is simple for the Terps. If they win they are pretty much a lock to go to the ACC Championship in Tampa. If they lose, then they will be fighting down to the wire with BC and FSU to try to secure a spot in that title game.

•A huge game takes place tonight in Norman, Oklahoma. The #5 Sooners host the #2 Texas Tech Red Raiders. This game is going to be an explosion of offense and I am so excited to see who prevails. Yesterday, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News posted some cool numbers/trends regarding tonights matchup. Here is that post

•Good evening everyone, right now I’m in my hotel room watching some college football and anxiously awaiting tomorrow’s Ravens-Giants game. It is going to be a lot of fun, I’ve never been to Giants Stadium so it should be fun.

•Wow, did you get a chance to see the 4th quarter of the Navy-Notre Dame game today? Navy was down 27-7 with 2:00 left to play in the 4th, and they scored two touchdowns in a span of 18 seconds thanks to an onside kick. That made the score 27-21. Then Navy recovered another onside kick with 1:21 remaining. At this point Navy had a very real shot at winning the game. But they stalled on offense and the Irish held on to win their 6th game of the year and become bowl eligible.

•Maryland held on against North Carolina earlier by a score of 17-15. After some fireworks from both offenses in the first half, only 3 total points were scored in the 2nd half. In the 4th quarter, Chris Turner led the Terps down the field on a 19 play drive that lasted 8:43. The drive was capped by a 26 yard Obi Egekeze field goal which put Maryland up 17-15 and proved to be the game winner.

•The Ravens face a tough task tomorrow afternoon. They will try to knock off the defending Super Bowl champs on the road. I’ll post a more detailed preview tomorrow morning before I head to the stadium. Until then have a good night.

Maryland is undefeated at Byrd Stadium this year

Maryland is undefeated at Byrd Stadium this year

•While there isn’t a “must see” game this week the way there has been pretty much every Saturday this year, today should be very interesting. Every week it seems like there are upsets happening left and right. That was certainly the case last week as 7 teams in the Top 25

•Because it is happening right here in Baltimore I will pay close attention to the Navy-Notre Dame game. Last year when these two played, it ended up being a 3 overtime thriller with Navy coming out on top for the first time in 43 games. As usual, expect a lot of running from the Mids. If Navy can generate enough pressure on Irish QB Jimmy Clausen, I think they have a very good shot at winning this one. Notre Dame needs one more win to become bowl eligible. MY PREDICTION: NOTRE DAME

•A big game in College Park today at 3:30, the Terps host #16 North Carolina. Maryland is in a tight race with FSU and Wake for first place in their division of the ACC. If the Terps win today and both FSU and Wake lose, then they will take sole possession of first place in the Atlantic division. Here are a few numbers regarding the Terps at home: They are 5-0 this year, outscoring teams by a 153-82 margin. They’re also 3-0 against the Top 25. So that trend definitely favors Maryland this afternoon, but the game is not played on paper. UNC is a well coached team and they have a good shot at winning this one. MY PREDICTION: MARYLAND

Today’s College Football Games

Nick Saban leads his #1 ranked Crimson Tide into "Death Valley"
Nick Saban, who led LSU to a 2003 National Championship, returns to Baton Rouge as coach of top ranked Alabama.

–At 3:30 we have a classic SEC showdown in “Death Valley”. Nick Saban led LSU to a national championship in 2003, and returns today as the coach of the number one ranked Crimson Tide. #15 LSU can shatter the hopes of a BCS Championship for Saban and ‘Bama by pulling off what would be a HUGE upset. Two weeks ago, Georgia ran all over LSU, in Tiger Stadium. The Bayou Bengals will have something to prove. But that same Georgia team also got crushed at home by Saban’s Crimson Tide. It would be a very cool scene to see Saban go down courtesy of his former team, but this season belongs to Alabama. They are playing very solid football and I don’t see them losing this game. ALABAMA

–The big primetime game has #2 Texas Tech hosting #8 Oklahoma State at 8:00. Texas Tech is coming off of their big upset of Texas, who was number 1 at the time. On the other hand Oklahoma State is having a very solid year themselves. They are 8-1, with their lone defeat coming at the hands of then top ranked Texas (A game in which they only lost by four) They are coming off of a 59-17 beating of Iowa State. I can easily see a letdown by Texas Tech. The Texas win was huge and it took a lot of of them. But Oklahoma State is playing their third game in five weeks against a top-3 opponent, which can also take a lot out of a team. Home field advantage will be the difference here. TEXAS TECH

Here are some other notable games happening today…

–#3 Penn State @ Iowa – 3:30

–#21 Cal @ #7 USC – 8:00

–#22 Georgia Tech @ #19 North Carolina – Noon

–#4 Florida @ Vanderbilt – 8:00
